Game of Thrones author George RR Martin republishes children’s book

The Ice Dragon, first written in 1980, will be republished with new artwork

The Ice Dragon, a children’s book by the Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, is to be republished with new artwork from the Spanish fantasy artist Luis Royo.

The Ice Dragon was first published in 1980, as part of an anthology, Dragons of Light. The tale was first republished as a stand-alone book in 2007, with artwork from Yvonne Gilbert. The new edition, published by Tor Books, will feature a series of original paintings by Royo. Although the final paintings are yet to be revealed, Tor books have released a number of sketches for the new edition, depicting a range of wintry skies, dragons, and snow-covered firs.

Parents worried about exposing their kids to a work by the notoriously bloody Game of Thrones author needn’t panic: a brief summary of The Ice Dragon reads more like a Hans Christian Anderson tale than Martin’s traditional style. The book tells the story of a young girl, Adara. Born in the heart of winter, Adara is the only person from her village able to connect with the mysterious Ice Dragon, a legendary creature that visits only when the weather turns cold.
