Junot Díaz on his new novel

The renown Dominican-American writer & 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Díaz is working on a new novel. The novel tells the story of two sisters in the times of Joaquín Balaguer, who governed the Dominican Republic for twelve years after the Trujillo era named ‘dictatura blanda’. It’s a time when a lot of leftist militants were murdered and forced in exile. Entitled as a lost generation in the Dominican Republic.

About the harsh historical realities of this Caribbean island Díaz has touched upon in his debut novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Other writers like Julia Alvarez also touched the theme in her book In the Time of the Butterflies relating the personal accounts of the Mirabal sisters during the time of the Trujillo regime.

Up to now the writing is not going as expected according to the author. It has taken him 11 years to produce the follow-up novel to Drown, his collection of short stories about growing up Dominican-American that was published to critical success in 1996.
Hope this time it will not take him that long to give us an extraordinary piece of work like his debut novel.
