Gabriel García Márquez Publishes New Book

After nearly six years, Gabriel García Márquez is publishing a new book. “Yo no vengo a decir un discurso” (I Didn’t Come to Give a Speech) is a compilation of, ironically, speeches that García Márquez has given throughout his life.

The author’s last work, “Memorias de mis putas tristes” (Memories of My Melancholy Whores), was published in 2004.

Random House Mondadori editor Cristobal Pera told the AFP of García Márquez’s new collection:

“He’s a man who hates giving speeches, but here you have a selection that reflects the essence of what he is, of his political and literary passions, and of his friends… [He] always resisted the speech genre, as part of his rejection of formalism… But it was when he had to give the [1982] Nobel acceptance speech that he agreed to use it to channel all his obsessions.”

The 83-year-old author is currently working on a new novel, “En agosto nos vemos,” (We’ll Meet in August). The publishing date is unknown.
