A little Masterpiece of local work

Recently my sister draw my attention to this beautifully made little masterpiece of my compatriots on the island of Aruba. Our beloved shoco (owl) is the star. The shoco is an endemic bird living on the island. It is small with long legs, penetrating big eyes and his fur is fluffy. Different from other owls in the world.

Throughout history men has been facinated and captivated by the owl. Though it’s not known what the shoco ment to pre-historic people living on Aruba, it figures promenantly on their ceramic work and in heir paintings. The shoco is represented on the 50 guilders currency of Aruba.  And there is even a Shoco Awards of Excellence.

Nowadays the invasive Boa constrictor is a serious threat to Aruba’s beloved bird populations. As well as the shoco. Another threat is men itself who encroaches their natural habitat by housing projects. Hopefully measures are taken to preserve not only the shoco but also other birds on the island that with time are threatened with extinction. I can’t recall having ever seeing a shoco, but I would like to be able to see them still in the wild.

Enjoy it!
