New Book: The Red Queen

Philippa Gregory is the New York Times bestselling author of the new book The Red Queen and other historical novels such as The Other Boleyn Girl which was made into a film starring Scarlett Johansson. The Red Queen is Gregory’s second book in her Cousins War series. The first book in the series is The White Queen.

The Red Queen tells the story of the child-bride of Edmund Tudor, who, although widowed in her early teens, uses her determination of character and wily plotting to infiltrate the house of York under the guise of loyal friend and servant, undermine the support for Richard III and ultimately ensure that her only son, Henry Tudor, triumphs as King of England. Through collaboration with the dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret agrees a betrothal between Henry and Elizabeth’s daughter, thereby uniting the families and resolving the Cousins War once and for all by founding of the Tudor dynasty.

From Philippa Gregory I have read A Respectable Trade and The Other Boleyn Girl.

One Response to “New Book: The Red Queen”

  1. I just read The Red Queen this week and blogged about it — http://midlifebatmitzvah.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/in-praise-of-philippa-gregory/. I’ve enjoyed all of Gregory’s Tudor novels, although my favorite was probably the one I read first, The Other Boleyn Girl. The Red Queen is a break from her others in that she manages to successfully build the book around a largely unsympathetic (yet wonderfully drawn) character.
