Julia Álvarez writes about Haïti

Haïti is in the lift. Besides Isabel Allende with her Island Beneath the Sea, Julia Álvarez’s next book will also be about Haïti. Recently she visited the border for inspirations for her new book, where she portraits Haïti before and after the earthquake.

According to Álvarez she finished the book in January. When the quake happened her editor asked her to write an epilogue to the book. That’s how she came to be in Dajabón at the border of the Dominican Republic and Haïti where she met with dignitaries of the government and the Haitian consul, Jean Baptiste Bien Aimé. He said the book could help the relations between dominicans and haitians to live as brothers and share one island. Álvarez stated that after the devastating earthquake the solidarity with the Haitian people has grown tremendously.

I’m looking forward to read her new book.
